Typically, a major fashion trend begins in the collective subconscious of the season’s biggest designers and takes its first step into the mainstream when it debuts on a runway. Maybe it’s in Milan, or New York or Paris Fashion Week, it doesn’t matter, it will eventually be on the shelves of Zara and in your shopping cart. If that sounds familiar to the famous “cerulean sweater monologue” of Prada of the devil, is. The fashion industry manages the cascading process of fashion trends from the catwalk to the sales shelf. However, there are rare exceptions to the rule where a trend sneaks up on TikTok FYP, celebrity Instagram posts, and H&M shelves just as it starts to hit the runway. I’m not sure who leaked the main metallic clothing trend early on, but it’s about to take over every sector of the fashion world.
I first noticed the trend during my recent vacation to Mallorca, Spain (these European countries think of all the interesting trends first). Everywhere I looked, women sparkled in shimmering, metallic bathing suits. I immediately bought a one-of-a-kind gold metallic piece from a local boutique. Then, just as I had my new swimsuit on, I open Instagram to see the first of many posts from Kim Kardashian in a metallic silver bikini.
It was soon revealed that the bikini photos were the teaser of the new SKIMS metallic swimsuit. Ah! Maybe Kim Kardashian is the industry insider beating the catwalks to trends (and I bet Kris Jenner was involved). At this point, it would be difficult to convince me that the world it does not do it revolve around Kim Kardashian: like a clockwork mechanism, Ms. Kardashian walked the Balenciaga Haute Couture show where Demna, designer and creative director of the brand, sent metallic looks on her runway.
Alongside Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman was one of the many celebrity guest who attended the Balenciaga show. She wore a one-shoulder silver metallic dress reminiscent of Lady Liberty (Blake Lively’s Met Gala look seems to have some competition).
As fashion week continued, other designers followed suits (sparkling armor): Fendi, Valentino and Jean Paul Gaultier all included metallic looks as highlights in their collections. Unsurprisingly, the decadent dresses, feather details and draped trains have eclipsed Zara’s current selection, although it won’t be long before every retailer steps forward.
