A car rental nightmare while traveling

Consumers are paying about $40 more per day than in 2019, according to AAA. This is in addition to limited supply and high demand.

SAN DIEGO — This summer, many Americans are taking a trip back to the world. But many who want to escape find themselves stuck trying to rent a car.

Major car rental companies like Hertz and Enterprise are struggling to keep up with high consumer demand.

Gabby Rodriguez booked her flight to San Diego from Florida earlier this year. She says she knew she would need a car to get around because she planned to use it to travel.

“So I couldn’t just rely on public transportation. But when I was looking for that car, I just couldn’t find anything available,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez tried to book a car rental with Enterprise only to find that there were no cars available on the date she needed it.

“I had to find other ways to get around, which were also expensive and not everyone can afford,” Rodriguez added.

The low supply affects not only those traveling on vacation, but also business and surprise trips.

If you do manage to find a car, it’s likely to be expensive. According to AAA, consumers are paying about 40% more per day for rent than in 2019.

In a statement to CBS 8 Hertz said:

Hertz is working closely with our automotive partners to add new vehicles to our fleet, purchasing low-mileage vehicles, pre-owned vehicles and moving vehicles to areas of greatest demand to support our customers during the ongoing microchip shortage that continues to affect the car. rental industry.

We are seeing a lot of demand this summer, especially in tourist destinations like San Diego, California. We advise customers to book as early as possible and make other travel arrangements at the same time. Another tip is to consider booking with nearby car rental locations, which may be more accessible if the airports are busy. Hertz has thousands of neighborhood locations across the country.”

Pietro Galli, a frequent business traveler, says he tried several places and still couldn’t find a rental car despite trying to book in advance.

“I tried to book every Hertz location in the area, I’m talking over 7 locations – none available,” Galli said.

In a statement, CBS 8 Enterprise said:

“Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car are seeing strong demand for rental vehicles throughout the busy summer travel season. Also, as more people drive to their destination, resulting in more people on the road, we continue to increase the number of people who need a rental to temporarily replace their personal vehicles.

While our fleet availability has improved significantly year on year, the main challenge currently remains the global microchip shortage and other supply chain constraints affecting all sectors, including new car availability. However, our teams work closely with our manufacturing partners to continually add new vehicles to our fleet to meet the most critical transportation needs of our customers, insurance and business partners.

It is still very important to book a vehicle as soon as possible for future trips. We also encourage people to double check if their preferred booking is not available as travel plans and bookings change frequently and bookings may become available. Additionally, specifying flexible dates and branch pickup locations in your search can help increase your options. To help streamline booking, Enterprise.com has a feature that helps direct customers to other nearby options (if available) during the online booking process when they make a reservation if their selected option does not show vehicle availability.,” said the representative of the company.

Both Rodriguez and Galli say more needs to be done to ensure customers’ needs are met.

“If rental cars are going to be such a big problem, then public transport needs to be much more reliable than it is now. And that’s not the case in many parts of the county,” Rodriguez added.
